A Brief Description of Section 508
Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make new opportunities available for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals.
The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508, agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others that do not disabilities.
"The real impact of 508 is ultimately upon the people it is meant to serve. Complying with Sec. 508 allows disabled people to work, live, and use the information they need just as do their friends, families, and colleagues." - Don Barrett, Department of Education General information about Sec. 508.
